We get all sorts of fascinating people visiting us at the Press. Our most recent guest was Fr. James Grummer, S.J. who is the North American Assistant at the Jesuit HQ in Rome. Fr. Grummer advises our Superior General, Fr. Adolfo de Nicolas, about everything to do with the work of the Jesuits and their colleagues in the U.S.A.
He has been working in Rome now for about three years and prior to that he was the Provincial Superior for the Wisconsin Province. The purpose of his visit to the Chicago Province is to get a deeper understanding of those of us who work in this area and of our ministries.
Fr. Grummer had a “Question & Answer” session with several of us and was asked about all sorts of things. Strangely enough, the reply that most people talked about afterwards was about how we Jesuits select our leadership. It was only as Jim was describing the rather elaborate process and I was watching people’s reactions that I realized that what seems perfectly normal and everyday to me must strike outsiders as complicated and even somewhat exotic. As one of the Sisters who works here said to me afterwards, “What a complex system you guys have. With us, it is one sister, one vote.”
