Continued from Part 3

After 5 happy years in Dublin, I was sent to study Philosophy in Paris. It was no contest – Paris won out over Philosophy every time. I did enough to get by, but my main education came from walking the boulevards and breathing in the heady aroma of Gauloises cigarettes, freshly-baked bread and a couple of thousand years of culture and refinement.

Notre Dame de Paris: Flying Buttress

Some Americans dislike the French, and especially Parisians, but I was lucky enough to have learned the language early in life so I was undaunted by their sometimes haughty tone. If you haven’t been to Paris, take my advice and go, even if it means selling everything you own to make the trip. It will change you forever.

Stay tuned for the next chapter of the long and winding road …
