Many years ago I visited Thailand and was doing the typical tourist thing of visiting a temple in Bangkok. I was wandering around minding my own business when suddenly a young monk asked me in quite good English, “Why are you always rushing around like this? I was surprised, especially since I’d been taking it slowly in the high heat and humidity, and stammered some nonsensical reply before trudging on. For some reason, the monk’s question has never really left me and I often find myself wondering how to answer it.
“Be still and know that I am God,” we are told in Psalm 46:10. It sounds, and is, remarkably simple. Why, then, is it so difficult for me to be still? Either I’m fidgety and unable to settle down enough to still my body or I do manage to relax but still have thoughts about work, family and friends zooming about in my head. And, of course, in many of those instances where I do get close to being “still,” I am only moments away from deep sleep!
What helps you to still yourself?
