Regular readers will know that I spent the better part of the 1980s in Japan – an experience that has provided me with multiple graces. One of the few regrets I have from my time there is that I never climbed Mount Fuji to witness the sun rising from its peak. It was always something that I could do, so I never made any special effort to do it. It is now unlikely that I will get the chance again.
There is unquestionably something majestic and mystical about this perfectly conical mountain and it was always a thrill to get a glimpse of it from the bullet train or, pollution permitting, from the rooftop of the Jesuit Theologate in the western suburbs of Tokyo.
Is there something like Mount Fuji for you? Something you could have seen or experienced that you missed and now wish you’d done it?
