Leonard Cohen, the French-Canadian songwriter, has an amazing voice – it sounds as if it has been marinated for decades in cigarettes, liquor and sorrow. I love his song, “Anthem,” and am especially taken by the refrain:
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.
Cohen is spot on. I try to be perfect for God, fail horrendously and then make myself (and others!) miserable. I need to remember not only that “there is a crack in everything” – no one and no thing is perfect – but also that my imperfections are what allow God’s light to shine into the dark places. It is time for me to give up notions of “perfect offerings’ and instead set about ringing some bells.
