Into the Examen

by Paul on March 30, 2009

In this video from St. Ignatius College Prep, we see a student trying out the Examen for himself. Perhaps something here will help if you are thinking about taking up the practice yourself or simply want to get a different take on something that’s already part of your prayer life.

I learned the Examen in the Stone Age, or at least the Church’s stone age at the beginning of the 1960s. It was to be done at noon and at the end of the day, and it was for identifying my sins during the half day period under review. Probably this was a misinterpretation of what Ignatius meant by the Examen, but because of this early teaching the Examen is one part of Ignatian spirituality that I have had little interest in. I think it is ironic that a presentation about the Examen for high school kids has finally gotten through to me about what the Examen really is. I guess Jesus meant it when He said to be like children to find our way to Him.

This was a helpful demonstration of the Examen. So simple and positive, yet powerful over time. I love the fact that just showing up consciously for my life allows grace to transform me day by day. I, too, was raised with an examination of conscience that focused more on sin and lesson the movement of God in my life. This is a great gift.
