Sitting quietly at home the other night, I suddenly became aware of the ticking of clocks. Multiple clocks. I found myself counting the number of clocks in the room – four “ordinary” clocks (with a fifth in the bathroom) and, if you include cell phones and other devices, I have a grand total of ten timepieces in one room. Eleven, if you count my wristwatch. From every place I sit, sleep or stand I can see the time.
At work, the dreaded “Outlook” tells me minute by relentless minute when and where to go and at home I seem to have fallen under the spell of the clock.
How did time get to be so powerful in our lives?
