My favorite three words in any language come from the Exsultet sung at the Easter Vigil – “O felix culpa” which in English gets translated as “O happy fault.”
The Church considers the sin of Adam and Eve – which started a whole big and bad mess – as a happy fault and a necessary evil because without it we would never have had the joy of knowing Christ. I don’t know if you’ve spent much time thinking about “happy faults” and “necessary evils” but I promise you it can be pretty liberating.
Tony de Mello, the Indian Jesuit author, put a modern gloss on this when he wrote: “Be grateful for your sins. They are carriers of grace.”
