Yesterday, Joe Durepos and I spoke at a Communications Workshop for Jesuit Scholastics [seminarians] at Loyola University here in Chicago. We ended our presentation on “500 Years of Jesuit Writers” with a video clip of Jim Martin (author of My Life with the Saints and A Jesuit Off-Broadway) appearing on The Colbert Report. A lively discussion ensued and Joe was asked what he thought people now were seeking most. Without a moment’s hesitation, Joe responded, “Authenticity.”
Late last night I tuned in to The Colbert Report and, after the initial applause had died down, heard Stephen Colbert say, “You know, folks, I gotta tell you, the thing I love about you here and out there in the nation is that you’re authentic.”
I nearly fell out of my chair.
