When Church authorities in Mexico City urged Catholics not to attend Mass last Sunday but instead to watch it on TV or listen to it on the radio, I knew that something serious was afoot. Now, people are talking about whether or not it is too dangerous to receive the Eucharist during a health crisis like this one.
It’s my view that it’s always risky to receive the Eucharist. If you are open to sharing the Body & Blood of Our Lord & Savior, you are risking a radical widening of your heart and a profound sharing with the joys and struggles of your sisters and brothers. The risks to our physical health, in comparison, seem relatively minor.
