Every morning as I drive to work along Lincoln Avenue, I see the spire of St. Alphonsus Parish Church. [Photograph is of some anonymous church.] It always reminds me that God is present in the city and on this street. Frequently, I am reminded to pray for someone or something. I’ve never darkened the doors of St. Alphonsus Church and yet its spire is as powerful a call to prayer for me as any muezzin at a mosque.
I started thinking about other things that call forth a prayerful response from me. I stop for an instant to pray when I see or hear an ambulance or fire truck and when I spot a hearse I pray for the soul of the deceased and the consolation of his or her family.
I suspect I’m not alone in having these Pavlovian responses. What things trigger conscousness of God and/or prayer for you?
