July 14th – Bastille Day. Groundskeeper Willy from The Simpsons famously smeared the French as “cheese eating surrender monkeys,” (playing into the resentment felt by thousands of ill-treated American tourists, no doubt), but I choose to celebrate the nation that brought us, “Liberte, Fraternite, & Egalite,” [Forgive the lack of accents.]
Benjamin Franklin famously said that beer was proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. By that scale, how joyous does God desire to make us through what the French have given us? A very partial list: Joan of Arc, baguettes, Theilhard de Chardin, brie, Coco Chanel, cognac, Notre Dame Cathedral, steak frites, Edith Piaf, our Statue of Liberty, Le Petit Prince, champagne… Need I say more?
