Yesterday, amid all the other news items, I was horrified to learn about the “botched execution” of a man in Ohio. For two hours, a team of technicians sought a vein into which to inject lethal drugs. [The preliminary sedative drugs, incidentally, are banned for use on animals by the American Vetinary Association.] Ohio’s Govenor has said that the State will try again next week.
Yes, the condemned prisoner is a convicted rapist and murderer but our Constitution clearly bans “cruel and unusual punishment.” How can this barbarity fail to meet that standard?
