What A Wonderful World

by Paul on October 9, 2009

Last week, we had the Discovery Channel ad to remind us that the world is “awesome,” but decades before someone reminded us what a wonderful world we have been given.  Here (in 2′19″) Louis Armstrong gives it to us “old school.”

This posting brings such mixed feelings. I tend to see war, corporate embezzlers, terrorism, oppressive rulers, terrible poverty, illness, crime, nuclear weapons, etc. I want to be like Louis Armstrong. I am sure that throughout his life he experienced bigotry and exclusion. I am sure he was as aware as I of the terrible things I have listed. And yet he sings “What a Wonderful World” with his heart as well as his voice. The words of the song remind us how beautiful this world can be. How many times have I prayed in thanksgiving for so much that is good in this world, and yet when I think of this world, all those terrible things come to mind first. There is no use in denying the things that are wrong with this world, but I pray that I be a man of sufficient faith that I also see all the wonderful gifts and people God has given this world, the work of God’s hands.
