One Word Metaphor

by Paul on October 19, 2009

101On Andrew Sullivan’s “Daily Dish” blog for The Atlantic Magazine I found the following:

StrategyOne polled Americans (n=1,000 telephone survey) October 9-12, 2009 with the following question:

“People often use metaphors to describe their life… Which ONE of the following do you think best describes your life?”

A Journey: 51%
A Battle: 11%
The Seasons: 10%
A Novel: 8%
A Race: 6%
A Live Performance, Like a Play: 5%
A Carousel: 4%
Other: 2%
Unsure: 2%

Are you a “journey” person or do you have another word to describe your life?  I think I’m on a quest.

I really like your choice of “quest”. For myself I find I need to call it “guided quest”.

It all depends upon the day… but lately I’ve been feeling like I’m in the novel Don Quixote.

A book…beginnings, ends, plot twists and all!

A Journey – most mysterious and wonderful and accompanied by some of the nicest and wisest people – the Jesuits and the RC’s.

Eric,

We’ll ignore the fact that you have doubled the word count!

Maura,

You went way beyond one word, but I do get a great sense of what you’re facing with the Don Quixote reference.

Michelle,

It is, indeed, a good thing to be a person of the book.

Ronrobjoe,

Welcome to People for Others. A journey speaks powerfully to us, doesn’t it? Let’s hope there are occasional rest stops along the way.

Yes it does Father Campbell.

Thank you for the welcome.

I echo your hope that there be “rest stops’ along the way and trust in providence that such will be so, for you, for me and all we love.

“Pilgrimage” is the way I think of as our journey through life. Love the blog.
Every best wish

For me, life is a LESSON. Learning the easy lesson is important. If not, we learn it the hard way. If we do not learn the lesson, it will repeat and repeat. We only know that we have learned the lesson, if our actions change.
