Most of you will know “On Eagles’ Wings,” with its refrain, “And He will raise you up on eagles’ wings/bear you on the breath of dawn/make you to shine like the sun/and hold you in the palm of His hand.”
Paul Coutinho S.J., author of How Big IsYour God and Just As You Are, recently pointed out that being on an eagle’s wing is not such a comfortable experience. Eagles take their babies up high and then drop them so that they learn to fly. If the baby eagles don’t fly, their mothers snatch them up in free fall, take them up even higher and drop them again!
Not exactly how the hymn makes it seem, is it?
