No Hands But Ours

by Paul on January 27, 2010

HandsThis little prayer by St. Teresa of Avila could be the “theme song” of People for Others:

God of love, help us to remember that Christ has no body now on earth but ours, no hands but ours, no feet but ours.

Ours are the eyes to see the needs of the world. Ours are the hands with which to bless everyone now.  Ours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good.

I’d heard of this prayer, but never seen it. One to cherish, pray over, and strive to live by. Sounds like People For Others, alright!

I pray for the Holy Spirit to come to my aid and fill me with the needed love and wisdom. I agree that this prayer is what “People For Others” means, and as we commit to what it calls us to, something we cannot do on our own, I ask God’s constant presence with each of us.

This prayer is new to me and I will reread it often. A copy of the Bookmark of St. Theresa of Avila is always on my desk and in the visor of my car. When things seem too much or I seem too anxious I read it. If you are not familiar with it, just Google and I know that a copy will pop up. For me it is a boost of faith and a calming breath all in one.

Thank you so much, Marg, for pointing me to the Bookmark. I’ve copied it in my notebook. We all need that “boost of faith and calming breath” every day, it seems. (Sometimes several times a day!)

Marg,

I knew the prayer but didn’t realize that it was called her “Bookmark.” Thank you for reminding us of it. As you can see from the comments, it has really touched many of us.

Marika,

I’m glad that you got what you needed today. If only I could promise to deliver what people need every day…
