When I was young, this day was called Spy Wednesday because it commemorates Judas Iscariot conspiring with the Sanhedrin to betray Jesus.
Have you ever been accused of betrayal? I have. Although I believed I was totally innocent, the accusation brought me to a dark and somewhat dangerous place within myself. But, even with this experience, I can only begin to glimpse the pain and turmoil that Judas’ betrayal must have caused Our Lord.
Spy Wednesday or, more recently, Holy Wednesday reminds us of the truth of C.S. Lewis’ comment that our souls are a battlefield: “There is no neutral ground in the universe; every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God and counter-claimed by Satan.”
May we always have the grace to stay close and faithful to Our Lord.
