A Prayer For Strength

by Paul on May 17, 2010

WeightI’ve already shared one of Rabindranath Tagore’s poems with you.  In this one, he prays for strength.  Even if we don’t feel it now, this is something for which we all need to pray.

Give Me Strength

This is my prayer to thee, my lord—strike,
strike at the root of penury in my heart.
Give me the strength lightly to bear my joys and sorrows.
Give me the strength to make my love fruitful in service.
Give me the strength never to disown the poor
or bend my knees before insolent might.
Give me the strength to raise my mind high above daily trifles.
And give me the strength to surrender my strength to thy will with love.

This prayer is full of complexity and confusion for me. My version of this is, “Please give me the strength to endure losing my strength.” My “I don’t understand,” addressed to God, especially refers to accelerated loss of strength in my arms. I have just became an Episcopal priest. I am losing my ability to raise the bread and wine during the Eucharist, and giving out communion wears out my arm. God has already answered in one way. The priests and people of our community have repeatedly offered to help me.

As St Paul states ” I do all things in God Who strengthens me. “. Lovely prayer. Will definitely add it to my book of prayers. Thank You
