Hearing For The First Time

by Paul on July 22, 2010

This is one of those “viral videos” that people pass on (just like I’m doing.)  I was utterly charmed.  The video [50"] shows what happens what happens when Jonathan’s cochlear implant is activated for the first time.

Too wonderful for words and praise God for the miracles we see every day!

That is great. I often wonder how lonely it must feel being profoundly deaf. The wonders of modern medicine are truly a blessing.

Praise God. An incarnational miracle. Humans discovering the secrets of God’s creation and turning them to wonders.

Such a beautiful example of how the voices of our loved ones are meant to imprint on our souls and bring them joy.
I don’t know if I have shared this before but when my son was born we rushed to the hospital to see him. The first thing the doctor asked us was if we wanted to watch him be circumcised. My husband (the nurse) was all for it. But I couldn’t bring myself to watch so I was asked to wait down the hall in a waiting room. His cry was so loud that I could hear him a corridor away. We visited his birth mother for a while and then went home disappointed that we could only see him thru the glass window until the paperwork came from the judge the next day allowing us to bring him home. The next morning when we arrived several of the babies has moved out and they had changed the nursery that our son was in. All of the name cards were facing the nurses station so we had no way of knowing which child was ours until… he began to cry. The minute I heard that cry I knew that was my son. My husband couldn’t believe that I could possibly be right but I was.
I think our voices are meant to bring us closer to those we love and it breaks my heart when I watch people tearing others especially those they are supposed to love apart with words.

Madonna,

Thank you for the reminder that there are miracles of God to be witnessed every day – if only we had the eyes to see.

Simon,

Yes, the wonders of modern medicine are a blessing. As with many blessings, however, there is also a dark side. I am not sure that all the money we spend to keep people alive when they’re old and very sick is as much of a blessing.

Eric,

As you say: Praise God. Amen. Amen.

Maura,

No, you hadn’t shared that wonderful story of hearing your son’s cry and knowing who he was. And I couldn’t agree with you more about having to watch people tearing others apart with words.

Paul, I have seen people hang on until some loved one is ready, in one case a 7 year old daughter. In another case an ALS patient lived over 30 years with a feeding tube and ventilator, otherwise paralyzed and unable to speak, and was a loving inspiration to thousands of people, especially the kids at the high school where he had coached. God’s ways are mysterious.
