A dedicated young American woman was doing some sort of human rights work in El Salvador. She was invited to a party but declined because she had too much work to do. Later the people who had invited her told her, “You’re not going to last here, you going to go back North.”
She was hurt and indignant: “What do you mean?” “The ones who don’t come to parties always leave.” They knew that unless we make a place for play and for beauty in our work we will begin to do harm to ourselves and others. Any change movement without joy or beauty is not sustainable.
Hmm. Where, I’m asking myself, is the joy and beauty in my life. Where is it in yours?
