For some reason, what comes to mind happened in a Tokyo hospital many years ago. I was sitting there waiting for some procedure or other when a couple hurried in. A doctor, (or at least someone in a white coat), said something to them and the woman suddenly fell unconscious to the floor.
I’ve always assumed that they were being told of the death of a relative, but it all happened so far across the vast waiting room that I saw rather than heard the event. The sight of that poor woman crumpling to the floor is forever imprinted in my brain.
In truth, I’m surprised and disappointed that I can’t come up with more examples of astonishment. I like to think that I have a sense of wonder… but maybe not.
When was the last time you were astonished?
