This is an ancient feast. Saint Ephrem talked about it in a sermon from 373C.E. The feast used to be celebrated during Easter and both Catholic and Orthodox Eastern Christians still celebrate it then. Pope Gregory III moved the feast to November 1 when he consecrated a chapel martyrs in St. Peter’s in Rome.
What I love most about All Saints Day is that it celebrates our unknown saints as well as the famous ones. I think about the many, many good and great people I have known who have gone to the Lord and I rejoice with them and for them.
I’m praying that we’ll join them.
