Today we commemorate the betrayal of Christ which led to his Passion, Death (and Resurrection.) Betrayal is a deeply painful area – our own experiences of it mark us for life and it is something that most of us have to struggle hard to forgive.
The Scriptures do not treat Judas kindly and I can never think about “thirty pieces of silver” without a slight chill going down my spine.
It is just too easy to make him into a scapegoat. I wonder about all the times I have (and will continue) to betray Christ by my actions and my omissions.
Having said that, I remain confident that Our Lord will welcome me with compassionate Love and so I also have faith that Judas went to a happy reward. I remind myself that with Jesus Christ there is only Good News.
