Today is a celebration of workers in communist states and we in the Catholic Church honor St. Joseph the Worker. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Joseph. He was given a tough assignment and he faithfully carried it out.
I only discovered recently that we don’t even know whether or not he was a carpenter. In Matthew 13:55, Jesus is described as the son of a “tekton.” This is a word (from the same root as “technical” and “technology”) that includes makers of many things, not just woodworking.
Having said that, his being a carpenter dates from very early in the Christian tradition.
I wish we knew a lot more about him than we do but, like most of us, he lived and died in obscurity.
For which saints do you have a particular fondness ?
