We’ve come to the final question in Joe Paprocki’s 7 Keys to Spiritual Wellness:
What gives you heartburn?
I’m not talking about the bad kind of heartburn. I know all about that kind of heartburn. I grew up as the son of a pharmacist and worked for years in our family drugstore, dispensing remedies for bad heartburn. I’m talking about good heartburn – the kind you actively seek and desire. I’m talking about those things that set your heart on fire. If you find those things, you’ll be on your way to spiritual wellness.
So what’s my “good heartburn”? I guess that what sets me on fire is anything where I can see people opening up further to our Loving God. Directing retreats, therefore, is a great grace in my life and there have been moments in the Sacrament of Reconciliation when I have witnessed tears of profound joy. Everything that leads to love, compassion, gentleness, respect and devotion gives me energy and hope for the future.
I should concentrate more on the “good heartburn.” When I read the headlines, I tend to start focusing on the bad kind.
