A little while ago, on my sister’s recommendation, I watched Elite Squad – The Enemy Within. It is the 2010 sequel to the first Elite Squad . Like the first movie, it is a “semi-fictional” account of the BOPE, a special police battalion within Rio de Janeiro’s military police.
After a botched BOPE raid during a prison riot, Lt. Col Roberto Nascimento [played chillingly by Wagner Moura] becomes embroiled in a grisly dispute that involves the Governor, other politicians, the military police and paramilitary groups. Corruption and cynicism run amok. It provides a completely dystopian vision of Brazilian or, at least, Rio de Janerian society.
It is, apparently, the highest grossing film in Brazil’s history, but it one – although excellently acted and expertly produced – that left me both sad and shaken.
It’s been a long, long time since a movie affected me that much.
Anything, for weal or woe, that rocked your world recently?
