The Most…

by Paul on August 28, 2012

Here, in no particular order, are:

  1. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen… my niece, shortly after her birth.
  2. The ugliest thing I’ve seen… Spanish police beating some poor soul on railway tracks near the border with France.
  3. The funniest thing I’ve seen… My 10th grade English teacher slipping on a banana peel.  Just like you’d imagine it – but much better.
  4. The stupidest thing I’ve done… participating in a car “race” to see who could delay braking longest before slamming into a high stone wall.
  5. The noblest thing I’ve done… walking past Helen Mirren on the beach without speaking to her.  I am such a fan on her work.
  6. The longest I’ve ever slept… 18 hours, my friend.
  7. The most difficult thing I’ve ever done… statistics classes in grad school.
  8. The most scared I’ve ever been… when vigilantes in Northern Ireland threw me up against a wall and I thought they were going to shoot.
  9. The most delicious thing I’ve eaten… citron vert sorbet from Chez Bertillon in Paris.
  10. The most excited I’ve ever been… riding Disney’s Space Mountain for the first time. I didn’t realize I was getting on a roller coaster.

Okay.  Over to you.  What’s your “the most…”?

I have to give this some thought, but best blog I ever began reading… People for Others!

Which allowed for Tim and I to have a lovely meet up and dinner last night!

One of my most amazing days: FOX News called and wanted me to comment live on JP II for the news that day. This was during his last days and they were desperate for anybody to fill air time I guess. I had edited two small books based on his writings. Anyway, a limo picked me up here at the Press and took me to their downtown studios. After an hour of essentially waiting around, listening to some producers in the next office talking about flipping condos, I was escorted to a darkened room. Told to sit, look at the little green light. Two feeds were put in my ears, one was the live broadcast feed, the other, the producer. Then boom, I was live on TV giving commentary on the Pope. Later, the limo dropped me off back at work. I came in the front door and several of my colleagues were walking by and said, hey, they recorded you and we’re all going to watch. My heart sank, I had gotten through the interview but had no desire to see myself. Reluctantly, I watched with two dozen of my colleagues. When the interview was over, they all looked at me, kind of surprised if I’m honest, and a slow clapping started. I was embarrassed, and secretly relieved/thrilled/proud. That was one of my most amazing and unexpected days. Thanks for asking…

Joe, how amazing! That would be an interesting link for the PFO community to watch.

Joe,

Remind me to tell you the story of how, by accident, I ended up giving out communion right next to Pope John Paul II at Notre Dame in Paris.

Thanks for this list and for the challenge. I’ll have to think about that (ponder these things in my heart, like Mary) and that’s a great gift to have received on this day when I’m busy about many things. Life is indeed extraordinary and full of gifts. It pays to pay attention.

Tom,

I’m amazed that I’ve caused you to ponder…

Since I am late to the party I won’t do my “most” since I would be stuck on #4 forever! ;) But, I think you should save #4 and #8 for a “Holy Crap!” blogpost cause both caused my heart to skip a beat! I mean, jeez Louise with #8 and this is from a girl who has been threatened to be shot more than once! But that scared me! Thanks be to God for letting you stick around! And #1 is beautiful.

My list can’t compare with yours, Paul, so I didn’t reply at first, but I’ll go ahead and give it a shot.

1. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen… my son when he’s happy.
2. The ugliest thing I’ve seen… A dead fighting dog someone left to rot in the Arizona desert.
3. The funniest thing I’ve seen… When we were teaching my friend to ride a bike, every time he realized we weren’t holding the bike for him anymore, he’d just curl up in a ball and fall over.
4. The stupidest thing I’ve done… Drove my ’89 Accord off the side of a Forest Service road in northern Wisconsin because I was staring off into the woods while driving.
5. The noblest thing I’ve done… Helped my friends move out of their apartment. They hadn’t planned or prepared. We provided the boxes and helped them pack, load the truck, and move their stuff into a storage container, finishing just before the facility locked up for the night.
6. The longest I’ve ever slept… About 14 hours, after a double-all-nighter in college.
7. The most difficult thing I’ve ever done… Get through the first three weeks after my son’s birth. Especially the first three days.
8. The most scared I’ve ever been… When some drunk guy picked a fight with me in a city park around 1:00 AM. He wouldn’t let me back out, and when he realized he couldn’t goad me into hitting him first, he kicked off his shoes, kicked me in the back of the head, and punched me in the mouth. I ran away.
9. The most delicious thing I’ve eaten… A fresh doughnut with ice cream at Zanzibar in Ann Arbor.
10. The most excited I’ve ever been… Kissing my future wife for the first time.
