Several years ago, New York was sweltering through a heat wave. A friend of mine, a diocesan priest who worked at the Archdiocesan Center in Manhattan, was standing at the curb, waiting for the light to change so he could cross the street.
A sympathetic bystander turned to him and said, “Father, what a sacrifice! It must terrible having to wear a black suit and clergy shirt in this weather.”
My friend looked at him and said, “This? You call wearing this a sacrifice? This is nothing. Try going without sex your entire life. That’s a sacrifice!”
He told me that the poor man was so stunned that he just stood there as my friend and many others started crossing the street!
