I hope and pray that each of you has had – or have! – wonderful teachers. I know I have been abundantly blessed throughout my life with gifted teachers.
In second grade, Mrs.Brennan opened up the Scriptures for me in remarkable ways. I will never forget the way she presented Mark 2:1-12 where the paralyzed man is let down through the roof to be healed by Jesus. She was able to make me present at the event and to be filled with joy and wonder. Bless her.
In fifth and sixth grade, Brother Holien was kind, gentle and rigorous. My mother said she got fed up with me constantly starting sentences with, “Brother Holien says…”
In Upper Sixth (age 18), our history teacher, Mr. McMahon, had us doing original research and corresponding with noted scholars. I loved every single moment of class with him.
In Theology, Adolfo Nicolas [currently the Superior General of the Jesuits] was outstanding. Funny, compassionate and engaging, he helped me to see how I could serve God’s people in very practical ways. He was full of bon mots such as, “God is always absurdly generous with Grace, what gives some clergy the right to be stingy with it?”
As a grad student in Communications, Prof. Verne Sparkes could make cable TV regulation into a fascinating topic… something of a miracle!
So, who were/are your great teachers?
