Monday Music Moment – Yo Yo Ma

by Paul on September 10, 2012

This morning I want to offer something soothing and contemplative. I can think of nothing better than Yo Yo Ma playing the Prelude from J.S. Bach’s First Cello Suite. Apparently, I am not alone in this kind of thinking. This video has had more than 9,000,000 views!

We’ve had a rough weekend here; as a result, this music is a richer gift than usual, for me. And how I thank you!

Stringed instruments are soothing to my soul. Thank you.

Lynda,

Yes, and if Yo Yo Ma can’t do it, no one can!

Like Steven Sharps Nelson (The cello guy from “The Piano Guys”) says — “the coolest song ever written for one cello.”

Thank you! Hope this soothing music successfully sets the tone for the week.

Denise,

Set the tone for a whole week? We should be so lucky!

His music can transform the snow covered steps of one of the county’s “ugliest municipal buildings” (a.k.a Boston City Hall) into a thing of beauty.
Thank you for a relaxing respite before a challenging day.

Maura,

It gives me great pleasure to know that I was the channel for a “relaxing respite.”

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video, but I never get tired of it (except for the little speech at the end; I don’t know what to make of that). One of my favorite musical pieces ever! It sounds about as good on classical guitar, too.

Jim,

I’m with you until the guitar bit. I accept that the guitar version is beautiful, but it is not quite as sublime as with the cello.

My guitar teacher even thinks it’s better on guitar, and he’ll readily admit that there are very few Bach pieces that sound better on guitar than on whatever they were written for.

A peaceful start to what will hopefully be a good week for us all.
