Well, I’ll be darned.
I was in a meeting yesterday afternoon and someone popped in and said, “The new Pope is a Jesuit.” “Nonsense,” I replied. “There isn’t a Jesuit in the bunch.”
Others came by with the same news. I was still skeptical… then someone said that The New York Times says he is a Jesuit and I had to start taking it seriously.
People kept coming up to congratulate me… as if I’d had something to do with his selection.
The truth is that I know next to nothing about our new Pope. I have heard that he is a humble and simple person who chose not to live in his bishop’s palace in Buenos Aires but instead had a modest apartment. What’s not to like about that?
We’ll be getting to know more about him in the weeks and months ahead but, above all, let’s pray for him so that he can heed the promptings of the Holy Spirit.
