A new dervish sat in a Sufi khaniqah when the Master–walking through the room–said in passing to one of the older dervishes, “Go clean your room. I’ll look at it later.”
The older dervish moved to a quiet corner to meditate, while the new dervish went out to work.
Much later, the new dervish returned to the room where he found the older man still sitting in the corner. With a very concerned expression he asked, “What are you doing? Aren’t you going to clean your room?”
The older dervish looked up at him and smiled. “The Master meant my heart.”
