I am so thankful that I have a lot of curiosity. It has sometimes gotten me into trouble (like the time, when I was about 4, that I ruined our brand new refrigerator by putting a lighted candle in it to see whether or not its coldness would put out the hot flame!) but it has also led me to watch Icelandic movies, eat potentially poisonous blow fish, wander around Thailand on my own, and read voraciously.
It’s also helped me with my life choices. When I first visited the Jesuits as a potential recruit I was told, “Well, we wouldn’t be opposed if you tried to apply.” I had assumed that with a “vocations shortage” that they would be falling all over me. It was my desire to see if I could make it in that led me to my life’s destiny. It was curiosity about Japan that led me there for nearly a decade and curiosity about a little publishing house in Chicago that brought me here to Loyola Press.
Where has your curiosity led you and are you thankful for it?
