It is funny how those "golden yesterdays" were rarely as wonderful as we picture them in memory. I remember a friend's mother who used to say of the teenage years never let adults tell you "those were the best years of my life" because they rarely are. I believe her point was that sometimes teens (and even adults too) get so overwhelmed in a negative moment that we don't look forward to the future with hope.

So beautiful Paul, thank you. We can all learn from this story and if we care to think more deeply, we have probably all of us experienced such an encounter.

This story has a powerful message. In addition to other things, it reminds me that we Christians fail to recognize the goodness, the creature made in the image of God, the heart that yearns for the infinite in those people who do not share our faith, those who say they do not believe in God. We therefore miss divine wisdom that they sometimes offer us. We miss the presence of God in them. Sometimes I tire of prayer requests for a sick or dying non-Christian in which the wording demeans or shows disrespect for the person to be prayed for.

Eric,

Whoops! The Catholic Standard and Times is a venerable old paper - but it certainly wasn't printing in 1008. I think I'll leave it as is, though. You're right, no matter when, or where, we all need to find God in the ordinary. And do enjoy seeking out God in teens and chocolate chip cookies - two of my favorite places to see Him.

peace,

Michelle

Eric,

"Beyond Words" looks like a good read. I just finished "Altar in the World" by Barbara Brown Taylor, which has many ways to pray in the everyday as well.

Thanks!
