Our Creche

by Paul on December 18, 2008

I am fairly new to my current Jesuit community, having moved in last February.  I am still discovering things about the house and its customs.  It being my first Christmas, I am finding out about our Christmas traditions and meeting “new friends” like this Bolivian creche set that graces our community chapel.  I don’t quite know what it is about this creche set that appeals to me so much – the fairly unceremonious way in which the Blessed Virgin is holding her Son or perhaps it is the goofy Muppet-like cattle?

Anyone want to send us a picture of their creche?

Chapel – up or down?

by Paul on December 1, 2008

One of my recent tasks has been to try and find a new home for our growing Jesuit community.  I went house hunting with a Jesuit friend the other day and we found that we strongly disagreed about where the chapel should be situated in any new residence.

I automatically looked for a room in the basement, whereas he would default to one of the major upstairs rooms.  While this disagreement possibly caused caused some wry amusement for the real estate agent, it left me feeling unsettled.  On the ride home, we hashed out our different approaches.  [click to continue...]

Giving Thanks

by Paul on November 27, 2008

I have so much to be grateful for, not just on this Thanksgiving Day, but every day.  I don’t count my blessings nearly as much as I could and should but, when I do, I am often overwhelmed with thankfulness.

This past year I had a little cancer scare that turned out to be nothing too much to worry about, I have a job that totally engages me, colleagues who are both competent & compassionate, a Jesuit community that seems not only to tolerate my various foibles & eccentricities but to find them – for the most part! – somewhat endearing, family members who although they are far away are gentle & supportive, and friends…  What did I ever do to deserve the dear good friends who make me laugh, help me cry, sop up my anger with ironic commentary and challenge me to go beyond my own petty concerns?  They are pure gold.

This year I am thankful for many, many things but, most of all, today I am grateful for God’s boundless mercy and love.  Alleluia.
