It was the first day of a U.S. History course at University College Dublin. The professor unfurled a map of the world and began to talk. But the map was all wrong. Somehow North & South America had been moved to the center.
Everyone knows that Europe is in the heart of it all, with the Americas off to the left and Asia over on the right hand side. And then, far too slowly, it dawned on me that my cultural inheritance was what made me believe that Europe was at the center and that everyone else is on the periphery.
Put Australia at the center of the map and the world sure looks different, doesn’t it? Perhaps we need to make more conscious efforts to see things from new angles. What if we looked the world, not from a consumerist First World perspective, but with the eyes of the downtrodden, the poor and the vulnerable?
